Scala 40 plunges you into one of Italy's most popular card games, where every turn matters and the tension builds as your opponents close in on victory. You are dealt thirteen cards and, over the rounds, you must draw and then discard to refine your hand, seeking to assemble three-of-a-kind, four-of-a-kind or runs of the same suit. The pivotal moment arrives when you finally lay down your initial melds on the table: they must total at least 40 points, that founding threshold that gives the game its name and that conditions the rest of your match. Until you have passed this threshold, you may neither draw from the discard pile nor add to melds already on the table, which can become frustrating when you watch the card you need taken from under your eyes. The joker is a precious weapon, able to substitute for any card in a meld, but beware: if it remains in your hand at the end, it will cost you 25 penalty points. Once you have opened, you can extend other players' melds or add your cards to them to lighten your hand faster.
