Combat Guardian - Under Attack places you in the middle of an arcade shootout where you defend the United States, state by state, across 50 distinct levels. From the start, you move through scenery that changes by region, with its own colors, terrain and enemy waves, then the pressure rises very quickly. You move to avoid being surrounded, you aim at the most troublesome targets and you let your shots do the work while the screen fills with assailants. Some opponents charge at you, others take more hits, others attack from a distance or trigger explosions, forcing you to read the situation constantly. Each state plays out over 3 rounds, which creates a real game rhythm, with deceptive respites before the danger returns. To continue, you must eliminate the entire group present, otherwise progression stops cold and the next state remains locked. Over the course of the game, you clearly feel that enemies become more aggressive and smarter, which changes your way of playing from one level to the next. You cannot simply survive by chance; you must choose where to move, which pack of enemies to clear first and when to pick up the stars left on the ground, since they are used to restore your health and ammunition. This management creates constant decisions, especially when space tightens and a sturdy opponent protects more dangerous shooters behind him. Every ten states, a boss breaks the usual rhythm and forces you into a tougher fight, where endurance is not enough without good positioning. Special attack bonuses and spectacular finishes then bring a real breath, especially when a round seems lost and you must turn the situation around in a few seconds.
