You take your place behind a twin anti-aircraft turret mounted on a Second World War destroyer in the middle of the ocean, while enemy squadrons dive straight toward the deck. From the very first seconds, the game asks you to track the aircraft in the sights, to open fire at the right moment and to shoot down each threat before impact. Fighters arrive first in dives, then the pressure rises with tighter waves, faster trajectories and enemy fire that complicates your defense. You are not only trying to hit, you must also avoid mistakes that let a bomb or a kamikaze plane get through, because a single poorly handled pass can cost the ship dearly. The dominant feeling comes from this constant urgency, between a saturated sky, falling projectiles and a hull that must be protected at all costs. Over the course of a game, you learn to split your attention between accuracy, the firing rhythm and the condition of your gun, since overheating completely disables the weapon until it cools. This detail forces you to temper your actions, to choose which target to prioritize and to avoid wasting your salvos on an aircraft that is already lost. Between stages, the ship recovers a little, which gives you a short respite before plunging back into combat, but never enough to play without discipline. Further on, resilient bombers, armored airships flying at high altitude and kamikazes that do not break off their attack require different reactions depending on their approach.
